The belief has not moved. What I can do with it has.
A systematic way to build products and services around what people actually need. It works on an organisation as well as it does on a product, and it is what the practice is named after. Mastering Design Thinking at MIT, 2020.
I designed my own house with an architect, in co-creation, and then did the building supervision myself. Not the building work. The decisions: every design choice the site threw up, day after day, for twelve months. Material, light, proportion, detail. That is where design stopped being a method I could quote and became a daily practice.
With AI I designed the Thermo Totems: heat-active aluminium profiles that harvest heat for a water-to-water heat pump. From the first idea through the research and the drawings to the filing itself. Ten EU designs, available for licence.
Not because I have read about it. I stand for agile organisations, agile teams and an agile IT landscape, and I have spent fifteen years making all three move.
With (gen)AI the same question returns, sharper. What do we build ourselves, what do we buy, and where does it physically run. Vendor and geopolitical dependency is an architecture decision now, not a procurement detail.
Setting the direction and owning the delivery, not advising on it from the side. One mandate at a time.
Taking the organisation from A to B. Continuity first, because nothing critical can go dark while it changes. Then how the work flows and who decides. Then the people.
A new organisation, on paper and then in practice. Where a design already exists I do not redraw it. I test it against what I find, adjust what will not hold, and get it running and staffed.
From scratch, with (gen)AI in the core. A function that ships working applications instead of a lab that produces pilots, with governance part of the design.
What it is called matters less. Director Transformation, Director AI & Transformation, Head of Innovation, you name it. The mandate, the decision rights and the budget are the parts that decide whether it works.
No design, no glory.
